What is the Defensive Driving Course

The Defensive Driving Course is a 6-hour online Driver Improvement Program, approved by the Province of Nova Scotia. It is the recognized course for drivers in the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system who want to remove the N designation from their licence, and for licensed drivers looking to reduce accumulated demerit points.

The course is delivered entirely online, so drivers from Halifax to Sydney, from Truro to Bridgewater, can complete it from home, from the office, or on a mobile device, no classroom required. You have 90 days of access to work through the modules at your own pace.

Through interactive modules, videos, and quizzes, participants gain practical insights into defensive driving. Moreover, they learn to anticipate and respond to potential hazards on the road.

These courses empower drivers with valuable skills. As a result, they contribute to the overall safety and well-being of all road users.

Our provincially approved “Driver Improvement Course” provides the knowledge and skills necessary to become a confident and responsible driver.

🏅  Certificate of Completion — issued within 1 business day

After passing the final examination, your certificate of completion is issued within 1 business day. You will receive it by email as a downloadable PDF — ready to submit to Access Nova Scotia or your insurance provider.

How to Remove the N From Your Nova Scotia Licence

Nova Scotia’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system requires Class 5N drivers to meet several conditions before they can remove the N and hold a full Class 5 licence. One of the accepted pathways is completing a provincially approved Driver Improvement course, which is exactly what Artin Driving School offers.

Step 1
Meet the minimum GDL time requirement. Nova Scotia requires that you hold your Class 5N licence for at least 12 months (or 24 months if you have a violation on your record) before you can progress.
Step 2
Complete the Artin Driving School Defensive Driving Course. Our online program is provincially approved and counts as your Driver Improvement credit for the GDL exit process. Your certificate of completion is issued within 1 business day of passing the final exam, delivered by email as a downloadable PDF.
Step 3
Submit your completion certificate to Access Nova Scotia. Bring or mail your certificate to your local Access Nova Scotia office along with your licence application fee.
⚠️ Important Completing this course satisfies the Driver Improvement requirement for GDL exit, but you must also meet all other conditions (minimum time in GDL, clean driving record during the period). Check your current standing with Access Nova Scotia before registering if unsure.

Reduce Demerit Points on Your Nova Scotia Driving Record

In Nova Scotia, demerit points are added to your driving record whenever you receive a traffic conviction. Under the Motor Vehicle Act, drivers who accumulate too many points risk having their licence suspended or facing increased insurance premiums. Completing a provincially approved Driver Improvement course, like the Artin Driving School Defensive Driving Course, is one of the recognized ways to address points on your record. After successful completion, you can apply to Access Nova Scotia to have the appropriate number of points deducted.

HOW IT WORKS?

  • Receive a letter from Access Nova Scotia prompting you to complete a Driver Improvement course OR contact Access Nova Scotia directly to confirm whether your points are eligible for deduction (not all points qualify)
  • Register and complete the Artin Driving School Defensive Driving Course online
  • Receive your certificate of completion within 1 business day of passing the final exam
  • Submit the certificate to Access Nova Scotia to process your demerit reduction request
📌
Check eligibility first

Not all demerit points are eligible for deduction. You should either have received a letter from Access Nova Scotia directing you to complete a Driver Improvement course, or confirm your eligibility with Access Nova Scotia before registering. Contact us if you have questions.

Can the Defensive Driving Course Lower Your Car Insurance in Nova Scotia?

Many Nova Scotia car insurance providers recognize completion of an approved Defensive Driving or Driver Improvement course as a positive factor in your driver profile. Submitting your certificate of completion to your insurer may result in a discount on your annual premium, the exact amount varies by provider.
Even if your insurer does not offer a formal discount, demonstrating that you have completed a driver improvement program can positively influence how underwriters assess your risk level, particularly if you have a recent claim or violation on your record.
